Welcome back. Well this year is certainly poised to be better than 2009 in almost every way. I am looking forward to 2010 so much as I am sure you are.
Almost every person in South Africa is feeling very proud that South Africa is hosting a great sporting event like the soccer world cup. The world cup is going to not only bring in immediate money, but with the demand for business to open to accommodate the large crowds it should also make sure that these businesses become sustainable, which ultimately improves our economy.
With many people creating their businesses, this year will be an extremely good time to work on the element of Enterprise Development. Enterprise Development aims at giving "one man" businesses the opportunity to make a success and grow using the infrastructure of a bigger business. Not only will this be of great benefit to the economy but BEE points can also be earned.

I have no doubt that his business will become a huge success and one day he won't even need our help.
His story is a small part of what 2010 will bring for the country as a whole. We are going to emphasize sustainability not only from the environmental point of view but more importantly an economic view. With 2010 bringing in thousands of tourists many small businesses are going to be started and it is very important for them to plan for business after 2010. We will be working very closely with other experts and will be hosting breakfasts and conferences explaining how closely related environmental and economic sustainability are.
|EconoBEE CEO calls for a B-BBEE Ombudsman/Adjudicator
Keith Levenstein, CEO of EconoBEE, calls on the minister of the dti and the BEE Council to implement without delay a B-BBEE Ombudsman or adjudicator.
"Every verification agency has a different interpretation of the codes, every consultant has a different viewpoint, and SANAS and the dti give no guidance on how various codes should be interpreted". The appeal process setup by SANAS is flawed. An appeal to a verification agency is handled by the agency itself, in some cases by the offending analyst herself, without independence. It has reached the stage where B-BBEE scorecards have less credibility now than in previous years, and causes unhappiness and de-motivation of the exact companies that should be involved in implementing B-BBEE.
We want an adjudicator to give rulings on interpretations that are legally binding on all verification agencies, and who can give advice on contentious issues before companies implement such actions that may turn out to be worthless in terms of points. This is important because different agencies can produce certificates that differ by up to 15 points from other agencies. It has reached the stage that companies are shopping around for a verification agency, not on their prices but based on their interpretation of a particular issue that will yield the most points. The rationale for accreditation was to establish a standard, for SANAS, an ISO body itself to enforce such standards. This has not happened.

|The Need for Empowerment - Why do we need broad-based black economic empowerment?
In South Africa, about 85% of our citizens are black (black, coloured, Indian and Chinese) and 15% white. The contrary applies to wealth in the country. Approximately 85% of all wealth/assets/salaries are in the hands of white and the remainder in black hands.
A similar percentage applies to the job market. Directors of companies listed on the JSE are overwhelmingly white. Pick ‘n Pay Stores, the subject currently of strike action and accusations of racism, has 14 directors, 2 of whom are black - 14%. Pick ‘n Pay Holdings has 100% white directors.
Jobs at the bottom end of the market - e.g. refuse workers are almost totally black. Poverty - the poorest people are in the main 100% black.
