While procurement is worth 20 points on the B-BBEE scorecard, many people perceive it as being very admin intensive and generally a difficult task. You have to identify all your procurement by supplier and type of expense, then go through the big effort of asking each supplier for a BEE scorecard. Then you need to know what to do about the certificate you get from the supplier. Each certificate must be examined for accuracy, expiry date etc. You need to capture the data by supplier, by his type of enterprise, his value adding status, his ownership etc etc. Then there are the calculations itself. You need to remember to take into account and calculate the score for each indicator etc etc etc.

The Green Economy: Strategies for True Sustainable Development

Globally, we are witnessing a combination of challenges which has arguably never been seen before. Over the next century, climate change is forecast to impact communities around the world, with the poorest communities being most severely affected. In the last three years, the world has also endured an economic downturn at least as severe as that of the 1930s. Many observers are asking whether the combination of these problems represents a failure in how international capitalism itself operates.
In the last 2009 edition of the EconoBEE newsletter, the concepts of sustainable development and corporate social responsibility were introduced. Businesses generally are becoming far more aware of the impact their activities have on the environment and the communities they serve. A cornerstone of this approach is the idea of sustainable development; ensuring that profits are generated in ways which are sustainable for their shareholders as well as for society and the environment. Calls have now also been made to ensure that recovery plans in response to the economic meltdown are implemented in order to achieve sustainable growth in economies across the globe.
These ideas have been embraced by the United National Environment Programme in a call for a ‘Global Green New Deal’ as part of a move towards a new ‘green’ economy. In essence, they argue that the congruence of a need to respond to global climate change and to recover from the economic crisis is a unique opportunity to change the way in which businesses operate – in fact, to change the way in which international capitalism itself will be defined in future.
For individual businesses, the challenge is not merely to survive the slowdown, but rebuild in truly sustainable ways. The businesses that devise strategies which are socially and environmentally responsible, and are first to take advantage of opportunities in a new, green economy are the ones which will flourish; thereby benefiting shareholders, communities and the environment alike in the long term.
